We have a bit happening this afternoon, so a fun but educational activity was planned for this morning. It's also a follow up from Maestro's reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes last term.
It's been a little while since we had an origami activity, the last being for maths/geometry in Feb 2009.
Today we practiced making 3 things from a book found at our library. We practiced on plain paper first, then each chose their favourite to make with our pretty Japanese origami papers.
Here they are:
Mariposa made the bird (albatross) and Maestro made the house. The other item is a mandarin, but we haven't put a face on him.
The book was fairly easy to follow, especially with these easier projects. The mandarin was the trickiest and they have even more complicated designs through the book. I'll have the book left out on the coffee table, hoping it will encourage the children to experiment with more creations during next week.
I had hoped that we could work on some Kirigami too, but it's another step up with complication. It's something we'll work towards later. With Mother's Day coming up in around 6 weeks, we could have a go at the free pattern available here. Or even from here, which has a larger range of freebies but look more complicated.

Oh they look great!! AAnd a very good tip about having a practice first and then using the Origami paper.
I am showing the links to our eldest tomorow. Our library is lacking with Origami books unfortunately, but will be searching some bookstores :)
This looks fun!
Oh my! Yes. Ditz was working towards 1 000 cranes lol some only the size of her thumbnail. I don't know how she got them so small! She loves origami. We had hopping frogs & even a minature piano!
The miniature piano sounds like it would have been a challenge ... upright or mini grand?
The piano was just an upright & fairly easy I think. I'm pretty sure it was in the Sonlight origami book we got with this unit. Did you get that too?
Ahh...
No, I didn't purchase that book. I'm just relying on library books for the origami. :)
