A question was recently asked on The Rockpool forum regarding how to teach children to tell the time. I prepared an answer, but whilst doing so I began to feel guilty that I haven't actually been putting to use all those free resources out there ... running on my own steam!
Well, I'm putting this post up to remind me to follow through for Mariposa, as well as to share with you.
She's learnt quite a few aspects of telling the time, but still hasn't quite grasped minutes to or past. We worked from telling the hour (o'clock) and half past, to quarter to and quarter past. She can count in 5s, so after some concentration is now able to work that out, but still needs to develop some confidence there.
A few activities we've done to get an aspect of how long a minute is include grabbing a stop watch and make a table with:
- how many star jumps can I do in a minute?
- how many times can I bounce a ball in a minute?
- how many times can I write/say my name in a minute? .... etc.
- if I count in my head to 60, how close will I be to a real minute? (still a great exercise with both children)
I really like using a clock with a sweep hand so the children can see the minute hand move. Some great clocks are available through places such as Modern Teaching Aids (select "Measurement" on the left shaded area for the pdf file ... from page 11 onwards).

I think time is one of those things it takes children...well, time, to master. They've had so little of it. Once Ditz had the idea of hours I worked on the idea of *real time* ~ easy for us with boats leaving at odd times. We missed one or two with Ditz in charge but she got the idea fast.Boats & music lessons.
We used a clock with movable hands, and lots of practice with clock stamps.
There are also DK books called Time and Money, and they are excellent!
