Now armed and hopping into ACTION!

Ha! That title does sound a little dramatic, doesn't it? But it just may be that we'll be hopping into action quickly should any of our frogs decide to escape their little fish bowl.

One of our tadpoles has had us excitedly watching it. On the weekend we noticed that both front legs were growing.

Today ... what a surprise! That tail has been shrinking fast, and those back legs are getting so much stronger. I think it will have to go back to the creek tonight.

And it's such a tiny little thing. Here it is perched on Mariposa's finger tips.

The other two tadpoles are still at the back leg stage. They are larger than this little frog, too, so obviously a different variety. I'll show you how they turn out when they've developed a little more.

Earlier this year, we had studied the life cycle of a frog.  Well, much to our excitement, all the rain recently meant that ponds and creeks rose, along with the likelihood of catching some tadpoles.  

We have three tadpoles, happily swimming about in a tupperware container, at the moment.  A search online has successfully given us information on how to keep tadpoles through the Victorian Frog Group and more information found here on Raising Tadpoles in Containers. We have frozen some lettuce for them, so will discard these fresher pieces (in the photo) with the frozen food when it's ready. 

I also managed to find some free blackline masters on Creek Ecosystems HERE.  This is tying in so well with the "Digital Frog" wetlands kit I reviewed earlier.  We've had a few fun nature study things happening this week! ☺
