Weekly happenings

The start back to third term wasn't quite off at a pace I'd anticipated. Unfortunately some illness took hold of first one child, then the other. Whilst both of us as parents are fairing fine, the need for sleep and comforting soups has been needed in these past several days.

So, the goal was set to have us stay at home as much as possible, staying toasty warm on cold drizzly days.

While Maestro was down, as he was ill first, Mariposa and I took time to get back to speed on her Spelling. She's almost ready to start another book, so I have put in another order with All About Spelling and look forward to that arriving soon.

We began reading Mr Popper's Penguins and should finish it next week.

Mariposa is also now learning more about measurement and coming along wonderfully with her maths. It's amazing to see the confidence develop as she's seeing how her basic arithmetic is applying to so many other things. I must remember to play more mathematical games with her. We've been using the Singapore Maths Instructor's Guides for ideas relevant to the learning, and it's making it so much more fun.

In the area of Science, we've been learning about seasons and the earth's orbiting of the sun. Measuring shadows during the course of the day just hasn't been able to happen as it's been too overcast most of the time.

Once Maestro's health picked up, we got back into doing a little bookwork. We took the slow road to figuring out the prime numbers up to 100 on Friday. (He's now started the Singapore Maths high school books, New Syllabus Maths.)

I chose to read The Bronze Bow aloud, and that was completed by Friday.

Science has been put on hold. Maestro's violin teacher is a chemist, so when we see her next (a lesson was missed because of illness), we'll pick up some supplies to do some experiments. We'll be growing some crystals with alum from the Apologia General Science module #6.

For me, I had a busy week with some more music students coming along. Not too long ago, we bought a new piano. This has meant that I can now offer lessons to homeschoolers nearby, and the numbers have already grown by another six students. Now I'm busy practicing whilst I can, which ended up being a good hour today.

As of today, only Mariposa is still feeling a little under the weather. We should be ready to get back into full swing again during next week.

Hoping you've all had a good weekend!

Hi there! Sorry to hear your two have been sick, however it still sounds like you've been able to accomplish lots of interesting things! Well done you for teaching piano! I'm sure that must be both rewarding and challenging! Mel x
