We've taken up an opportunity for Maestro to learn some leathercraft and woodworking skills with a group of local homeschoolers. The gentleman taking the class has had years of experiencing taking such classes, so we're heading out twice a week (only a 45min drive) to his property. He also uses products that are naturally produced where possible, including some naturally tanned leather for this project.
Maestro started off with making his first quiver. It was all made to measure to his long torso, but Maestro did the cutting, preparing the holes and the sewing.
Mariposa and I settled in the farmhouse to do a little bookwork, then she amused herself with a new friend, "Pebbles". Mariposa even performed a rescue mission when Pebbles took off with the leather lacing for a good old chew. Just as well she's had plenty of practice with Midgy here at home! Sorry pup, looks like you have to stay tied up if that's what's going to happen with the leather goods.
We'll be back there on Mondays and Wednesdays through to early April. Maestro will be making a longbow, arrows, knife and a knife pocket, as well as practice in whittling, making a wooden bowl and maybe a few other such activities.
All photos taken by Mariposa.
