You Yangs

Sunny skies, cool breeze .. a perfect day to spend outdoors. We packed up our lunches, hats, sunscreen and water, then headed south to climb a mountain.

The You Yangs are situated not far from Melbourne, and is a relatively short climb before reaching the summit. This was also a fun way of learning some more local history, along with some geology c/- the museum's website.

We often pass these mountains on our way to visit family in Geelong. We intended to make the most of this day, so our agenda was to (i) climb Flinders Peak, (ii) head to Geelong for a beach picnic, then (iii) visit family.

We chose Flinders Peak as we wanted to take the children to the top.

Not long after starting out, we noticed this very large (around 10cm long) orange spider wasp.  I wasn't quick enough with the camera to get a photo of it on the open gravel, but did manage to get this as it was dragging it's lunch back to it's nest in the ground.  It had hold of a huntsman .. can you see it?

At the lookout to see the Bunjil Geoglyph, created in commemoration of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Both children got to the summit before us.

Time for a drink and a snack before heading down again.
Whilst we were here, we met someone who'd just sprinted up the mountain.  Yes .. people RUN up this mountain!  I guess if we lived closer we could add this to our fitness program, too.

Next, a change of scenery.  We headed off to Geelong's beach for a picnic lunch and a splash about on the shore for the children.

A stroll near the pier, a cappuccino,  then a ferris wheel ride.

The ferris wheel is a great place to take photos, of the beach ....

... and the mountain we'd just climbed a couple of hours ago
(on the horizon).

I think I'd give the running up the mountain a miss, actually. My legs are too short, and some of those steps would be far too steep to take too quickly.

This guy we met said his best time was 10min30secs. We took almost 45mins to get to the top.

Sounds like fun! I've told my eldest daughter I'll start running with her this year (2011). IT seemed like a good idea at the time!! We won't be tackling any mountains though! Merry Christmas to you! Mel x

My dh says he's been up to the top of the You Yangs! I can't imagine running up to the top either! Geelong is very pretty, I remember those sculptures from our last trip down there:)

The You Yangs was the local picnic spot for us growing up. As teens, we would race friends to the top. Now I'd really struggle to walk up...my fitness isn't fantastic.
Thanks for the memories and new images. Must take the boys back there soon.
