Placing the value in maths

With most of our textbooks for Maths completed for the year, we're changing direction and using a more 'living books' approach to our maths.

Over the past few months I've collected a few of the Sir Cumference books and yesterday both children enjoyed Sir Cumference and All the Kings Tens.  Then out came our place value chart from Scholastic* and a discussion of infinity.

This all works beautifully with the Sonlight Science 3 book we're also beginning to use, Usborne Science Encyclopedia.  The first pages talk about counting and numbers.  Perfect!!

Maestro is also reading the Life of Fred: Fractions book.  The first few chapters have been a bit easy for him, but it's fun and there are lots of other concepts built into the story telling which we really like.  It's a fun way to finish of the year's work and recap concepts we've covered so far.  I'm sure we'll come across many new things as we delve further into the book.
