Free play - stolen from our children?

Someone on our homeschooling forum mentioned seeing a documentary on the ABC channel recently. Unfortunately, I missed it on air but managed to see it online. It's well worth the watching (45mins).

The program is called "Lost Adventures of Childhood".

" Play, for the sake of play, has disappeared. Where once kids played freely in the streets and alleys of their neighbourhoods, creating their own games and the rules that went with them... today we have play dates, GPS tracking systems for children and year round organised sports.

It wasn't that long ago that free play was the order of the day. Kids came home when the lights went on - their parents oblivious to where they'd been and what they were up to. Not anymore. This is the era of the hyper-managed childhood.

Lost Adventures Of Childhood looks at how we got here. And to what end. What does it matter if kids don't play the old fashioned way? According to the scientists who make their living studying the subject - everything from literacy and creativity to social acumen and mental health is suffering. It turns out what we once thought of as simply idle, wasted time, is nothing less than nature's way of making sure kids learn. "

If you're interested, you can view it online on this page.

Waah. You can only view this in Australia. Sounded interesting, too.

Interesting ~ & very American. All I can say is I was an old fashioned parent & being semi~rural ours got lots & lots of free play. We chose to live here so we could give our kids that opportunity.

What a shame it isn't viewable outside Australia. I was hoping it would be!

I know it's very American, but in many suburbs it's like that here. Choosing to live in areas that are more rural do look more and more appealing.

My husband and I saw this program on ABC, it really is just spot on with how the world now has truly stolen childrens free play! Earlier before we switched the program on I had just been reading the same thoughts in 'For the childrens sake'. xxx

oh, and I just noticed others saying it was American, the one we watched recently was filmed in England! But the truth of the matter applies to all! xxx

We watched it on the ABC and it was spot on!
Some if it was just too sad (tagging the kids to know where they are etc)!
