Honeyeaters in the Rosemary

Our couch is situated in a very good place, it seems, as we can still be aware of our backyard birdlife whist enjoying a book together.

Today, we were watching a New Holland Honeyeater feasting on the nectar of the rosemary flowers. All of the sudden the baby appears also. We must have a nest nearby!

These birds are small, about the size of a canary. They're black and white, with bright yellow on the wings, and a very high pitched 'chik' sound (go to this page for a sample of their song on mp3).

After the parent flew off, the baby hopped around and allowed us to take a couple more pictures. They're not too clear because of the glass window, the rain and the angle at which we were trying to get a good photo ... sorry!!

Not long after it decided it had enough and flew off, a White Plumed Honeyeater decided to come on over and check on the food situation. We have lots of these nesting in the nearby trees. They're very good at alerting us to the presence of any cats in the backyard with all their chattering.

There always seem to be plenty of honey eaters. The little brown ones are constantly in our birdbath teasing the cats. Dearest refers to the bird bath as the cat~snack~bar. lol

LOL joyfulmum!

Ganeida, I know what you mean about the 'cat-snack-bar'. Our bird feeder is fulfilling that job atm, so I'm having to not fill it so often. There's a stray cat laying wait under a bush there most times.

I enjoyed your post! We have a big window right outside the little "nook" where our dining room table sits, so this past spring we put up some bird feeders and planted some rose bushes. It has been such wonderful fun watching our MANY bird visitors each day!! We have two indoor cats (none outdoors), and they also love to sit in the windowsill and watch the birds. Alas, no snack for them since they can't go outside! We have identified several birds who are "regular" daily visitors. One of them is a tiny bright blue bird that is just beautiful!! We have several mommy and daddy cardinals, a pigeon, and some little chickadees as well as two hummingbirds that all visit often.

These are my favourite birds. They give me such pleasure as I watch their amazing arial acrobatics. Amazing little things.
