Back in February, I shared how my children were asking if we could plan to visit Egypt one year. Well, it's just not in our budget, as much as we'd love for it to be! BUT - we had opportunity to join a group of homeschoolers to see a documentary at the IMAX theatre today. We had booked to see "Mysteries of Egypt".
Going to IMAX was a first for all of us, so hubby took an annual leave day also.
Right up near the front, I can personally say that I felt like I was 'swallowed up' into the film, and the flight scenes were just amazing.
Our work covering Egypt in Story of the World certainly helped the children understand quite a few aspects of the narration. We had also made use of our library's copy of Pyramid on dvd to see how the pyramids were made, but when it came to an explanation about the Valley of the Kings, I realised that it was one area on which I hadn't spent enough time. However, Maestro reassured me. He'd read quite a bit from Cairo Jim and seen the 'behind the scenes' from Young Indiana Jones to know about when King Tut's tomb was found.
While Maestro reaffirmed the facts he'd remembered, Mariposa began ooohing and aaahing over the treasures found in King Tut's tomb. She obviously has an eye for pretty objects! :) I'm thinking that a follow-up on some of the precious stones and metals used by the Egyptians may be appropriate, especially as not much information was given in the film. In fact, it's a shame that was over so quickly, or it seemed quickly as we were absorbed with looking. Alabaster was mentioned, so I'm keen to find out more.

A great learning excursion! Eygpt has always been a fascinating place to study. Alas, it is not in our budget to go there either, but like you, we love to transported for a short visit by good presentations.
