A walk outside

A wander around the garden on the coolest evening we've had in a while showed us the toll this hot weather has really had on our garden.

My main concern was for the chooks. We've been giving them regular fresh water refills and watering under the plum trees to provide cool shelter until all our tank water was used. They've also had offcuts of melons and greens.

Tonight I let the hens out for a graze on whatever green grass (or should I say 'weeds') they could manage to find whilst looking over the beds to see if there would be any edibles left for harvesting.

Isn't this the saddest looking silverbeet you've ever seen (and it's the best of the lot!)?

Sunburnt pears, but thankfully not all of the fruit was affected.

I can't show you the potatoes as there was nothing left to show. I'm hoping that with some watering and more mulch, they may perk up again.

A job to be done - pruning the climbing roses. This is so hardy, I know it will be back again very soon for us to enjoy.

Yet, there is still some beauty in what remains. My yellow climbing rose, which would have received a great deal of the midday heat, still produce a few wonderful blooms. There is usually some remnant which survives the toughest conditions.

And out in the front garden, this baby praying mantis was a cheerful site:

Your roses look absolutely beautiful, while our roses have all of their leaves burned off.

Still, I would look just like they do if I spent all day outdoors. It is so hot up here, 43C for the last week, but today it is only going to be 41C.

Our apples were also sunburned, but we managed to save a bucket and a half. Not bad for their first season, and considering the heat.

Some of our corn, however, has curled up its toes. These were seedlings, but the corn grown from seeds seems to be growing better.

Glad to hear you could harvest some of your apples. Isn't it too early to pick them though - just for cooking, or eating?
I hope you get some relief in your part of Oz soon.
